Aurecon Design Academy is a design-led strategy, delivered through a structured capability system, that develops eminent practitioners who combine deep expertise with innovation and leadership. Delivered over three years in partnership with RMIT’s School of Property, Construction and Project Management, it embeds human-centred design into how Aurecon creates value.

  • CHALLENGE

  • Aurecon faced a strategic inflection point: technical expertise alone was no longer sufficient to differentiate in increasingly complex, multidisciplinary markets. Clients expect integrated thinking, innovation and leadership that translate insight into outcomes. Existing development approaches were fragmented and unable to scale impact. The challenge was to design a sustained, multi-year strategic intervention within the constraints of a global, project-based business, where senior practitioners have limited time and capability must be developed alongside delivery. The solution needed to reshape how practitioners think and lead while embedding a repeatable capability that drives long-term competitive advantage and sustained organisational performance.

  • Aurecon Design Academy is a design-led strategy delivered through a targeted capability system focused on senior practitioners, where influence on client outcomes and strategic direction is greatest. A selective cohort undertakes a structured three-year journey integrating human-centred design, systems thinking, innovation and applied research. Underpinned by Aurecon’s design methodology: “what is”, “what if”, “what works” and “what works best”, the Academy enables practitioners to move from insight to action in real-world contexts. Over ten years, it has developed a global network of 100+ Scholars and Alumni, creating a solution that embeds design, innovation and leadership across projects, clients and markets.

  • Design Academy has transformed how Aurecon converts expertise into measurable impact. Scholar-led initiatives have generated millions in revenue, new service offerings and successful bids, while improving outcomes across complex projects. Over a three-year journey, practitioners develop the capability to reframe challenges, accelerate decision-making and deliver innovation through applied projects in areas such as regenerative design and decarbonisation, including solutions such as embodied carbon tools and energy optimisation models. With over 100 Scholars and Alumni globally, the Academy has created a distributed Eminence Network that scales capability, strengthens delivery quality and positions Aurecon as a trusted partner for complex, future-focused challenges.

  • The Academy operates as a strategic system that embeds capability into how the business operates, rather than as a standalone initiative. A defining feature is its selective cohort model (~15 participants annually), ensuring depth, rigour and peer challenge at a senior level. This creates a high-trust environment for experimentation and critical thinking. The Academy integrates academic, industry and client perspectives through its partnership with RMIT’s School of Property, Construction and Project Management, external experts and client challenges, ensuring exposure to diverse thinking shaping industry. This extends beyond curriculum into the participant experience. Each year, participants come together for a four-day immersive at RMIT’s Melbourne campus, enabling collaboration and problem-solving. This supports design with empathy by creating distance from delivery constraints. A Year 1 bootcamp, supported by mentorship from Design Directors and senior leaders, accelerates connection and collaboration. Learning is structured around applied practice, with participants working on live problems, pitching ideas and testing solutions. The Academy is iterative and adaptive, evolving in response to market signals and priorities. A visible identity is established through branded elements and digital assets, making the network recognisable across the organisation. Graduates remain connected through a structured network, reinforcing design capability as a sustained system.
