The Wonderful Town of Play transforms a 32,000-sq. ft. underutilised rooftop at T Town shopping centre into Hong Kong’s first wetland-themed outdoor playground. It features play structures, multi-sensory entryways, and seven zones guided by native bird mascots, serving as a sustainable community hub for all ages.

  • Located in Tin Shui Wai—a district known for its proximity to world-class wetlands but historically constrained by limited per-capita recreational space—the playground transforms an underused commercial rooftop into a vibrant, free-to-access community hub where residents already shop and dine. It carefully balances ecological education and functional play, using mascots and wetland-themed zones to reflect local identity, meet multi-generational needs, and foster a strong sense of neighbourhood belonging, seamlessly blending commercial convenience with essential daily recreation.

  • The residents of Tin Shui Wai need a safe, accessible, high-quality outdoor recreational space that feels like a natural extension of their daily lives. The playground’s adaptability is a core feature, evolving to serve different demographics throughout the day. Nine distinct zones, landmark climbing structures, and multi-sensory corridors ensure inclusivity and engagement for all ages. By day, it is energetic and family-friendly; by night, lighting transforms it into a calm social space. Sustainable construction, community co-creation, and educational panels embed cultural relevance, creating a safe, accessible, and inspiring urban hub.

  • A core objective of The Wonderful Town of Play is to build social cohesion in a district with a high concentration of low-income families. The project actively engaged the community from the outset, hosting focus groups with families and charitable organisations to precisely capture local needs. One of the murals was collaboratively painted by local residents and students, instilling a deep sense of local ownership. By transforming a dormant commercial rooftop into a narrative-driven playground, the project sets a new standard for commercial placemaking, encouraging developers to look beyond traditional retail models and invest in the social infrastructure of neighbourhoods.

  • Rather than a collection of generic play equipment, The Wonderful Town of Play is conceived as a single, narrative-driven, locally-rooted landscape that transforms a shopping mall rooftop into Hong Kong’s first wetland-themed community playground. Inspired by local wetland species and habitats, mascot-led entryways and play zones weave education, daily recreation, and neighbourhood identity into one cohesive place.
