Quiet Studio is a temporary, acoustically calibrated installation presented at NGV’s Melbourne Design Week 2025. It offers a civic refuge from urban intensity through sound, form and material, with a program of guided sessions supporting an inclusive environment for rest, reflection and shared stillness within the contemporary city.

  • Quiet Studio responds to rising urban noise, cognitive overload and the lack of small, accessible spaces for rest within civic environments. A central challenge was introducing a soft, calming environment within a hard, noisy urban setting. The brief required a temporary, open access installation capable of delivering measurable wellbeing outcomes within a compact footprint while accommodating high visitor turnover. Key challenges included translating acoustic performance into spatial experience, achieving technical precision within a compressed timeframe, and balancing intimacy with continuous public use, alongside environmentally responsible, modular systems designed for disassembly and reuse.

  • A choreographed, multi sensory environment guides visitors from urban intensity into immersive quiet. A sequence of acoustically tuned chambers uses curved geometries and high performance materials, developed with Autex Acoustics, to shape sound and movement. Warm earthen tones establish a grounded atmosphere, while programmable lighting shifts in intensity and colour temperature across the day in alignment with circadian rhythms. A subtle incense adds a soft woody warmth. Sammy Prowse of Universal Practice played a key role in developing the sensory and wellbeing aspects and led guided stillness sessions, informing the spatial sequencing. Iterative prototyping and acoustic testing ensured measurable performance.

  • Quiet Studio demonstrates how small scale, research led design can deliver measurable wellbeing outcomes in public space. Independent acoustic testing confirmed reduced reverberation and improved speech clarity, supporting lower cognitive load and increased attentiveness. Free, open access and guided programming enabled inclusive participation across diverse audiences. The project advances environmental responsibility through modular construction, enabling disassembly and reuse, and through materials sourced via carbon neutral manufacturing aligned with net zero targets. Positioned at the intersection of design, health and civic life, Quiet Studio offers a scalable prototype for embedding sensory performance and wellbeing into everyday environments.

  • Quiet Studio integrates acoustic performance, spatial clarity and embodied practice within a compact civic installation. Interconnected chambers are precisely calibrated to progressively reduce sound intensity, using curved geometries to diffuse noise and guide movement, establishing a clear experiential gradient from urban intensity to quiet.Material systems developed with Autex Acoustics enable accurate control of reverberation while embedding environmental responsibility through carbon neutral production and alignment with net zero targets. Sustainability is therefore integral to the technical and spatial resolution of the project. The project is distinguished by its integration of wellbeing practices. Collaboration with Sammy Prowse (Universal Practice) informed the sensory environment and spatial sequencing, alongside a program of guided stillness sessions that activated the installation as both space and practice.Cultural awareness is embedded as a core driver. Acknowledgement of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation was supported through public programming, including a sold out talk that foregrounded First Nations perspectives and relational systems of respect with Country. These principles informed the project’s conceptual alignment with nature, care and interconnection.Designed as a modular system, Quiet Studio can be disassembled, reused and adapted across future contexts.
