Knog’s Oi Prima Bicycle Bell

Knog set out to re-imagine an already beautiful and simple product, the Oi, as even louder and more elegant. The team wanted to retain the same size and shape, which discretely fits onto often crowded handlebars, while increasing its volume. In an analogue product like a bell, increasing the output volume would often require increasing its size -- the larger the ringer, the louder the bell. The team also began to look at the hammer design--while simple and efficient, it did allow a user to over stretch the spring which would in turn decrease its efficacy, and possibly damage the product.

Without modifying the existing size and shape, increasing the volume proved to be challenging, so Knog re-designed the hammer, profile and material in order to maximise the output of the standard Oi ringer. The new hammer design of the Oi Prima Bicycle bell, uses a paddle shape, as opposed to its standard spring mounted ringer. The Oi Prima bell also features a new blend of SG Nylon in the paddle, allowing to to flex ever so slightly, creating a wave like motion. This motion allows us to drive additional force onto the ringer, increasing its volume while retaining its shape.

The refined and re-imagined Oi Prima provides users with a safety product, disguised as a piece of bicycle jewellery. The increase in volume and crisp tone of the Prima bell help riders better alert fellow road users of their whereabouts. The new paddle design ensures the Oi Prima bell will ring for many, many trips to come. And its elegant, low profile form factor prevent the bell from being seen as a clunky, unfashionable safety device, and instead re-position the bell as an essential accessory for all cyclists.

The Oi Prima features a new WAVETEK hammer design, which uses a proprietary nylon blend hammer designed to flex at its apex. The WAVETEK hammer also helps provide increased hammer durability, ensuring the 100,000th ring sounds just as good as the first.
