Integrating local culture, sustainability, and indigenous heritage into a unified design posed challenges. Combining historical timbers and modern elements required meticulous planning to preserve history while maintaining cohesion. Respecting indigenous heritage involved collaboration with the Whadjuk Noongar cultural architects and incorporating indigenous art. Unique features like the immersive experience and spiral staircase added technical complexities, managed within budget and time constraints. Achieving 6-star Green Star and WELL Platinum Certifications demanded a focus on materials and energy efficiency. Balancing sustainability goals with design aesthetics and functionality was an ongoing challenge.

Gensler focused on teamwork, bringing together architects, designers and cultural advisors. Communication was open with all stakeholders to make sure we considered all viewpoints. To combine various aspects like local culture and indigenous heritage, we did thorough research working with indigenous communities to gain important insights, ensuring our design respected their traditions. Collaborating with Whadjuk Noongar ’cultural architects’ helped us understand their culture blending them into the design naturally. Tackling the technical challenges like the immersive experience and spiral staircase, we used advanced modelling to visualise before building them while choosing environmentally friendly materials, to save energy reducing environmental harm.

The design takes cues from the local environment, specifically the water and land that define the area. This influence is seen in the colour scheme, reflecting the colours of Elizabeth Quay, Perth, Barrow Island, and Onslow. Chevron Australia HQ’s transformation is about more than just a building; it embodies respect for the land, appreciation for diversity, and harmony with nature. The result is a dynamic space that not only honors indigenous heritage but represents sustainable architecture and cultural understanding. Chevron Perth is more than a building; it’s a living story of connection and purpose, woven into Western Australia’s vibrant landscape.
