  • VAILO aimed to develop an outdoor lighting solution in accordance with the ”National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife 2023,” set forth by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water. The brief emphasized the need to minimise the effects of artificial lighting on wildlife, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas. A key aspect of the challenge was the elimination of the blue spectrum of light output in the luminaire’s design. This elimination aimed to reduce insect attraction and mitigate disruptions to animal nocturnal behaviours, marking a significant step towards safeguarding wildlife habitats from the adverse impacts of artificial lighting.

  • The solution from VAILO is a 1000W Luminaire employing Phosphor Converted Amber LEDs that eliminate the blue spectrum of light output while preserving a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI). This ensures optimal illumination for human use while minimising disruption to nocturnal wildlife, in alignment with the Design Challenge outlaid in the ”National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife 2023.” Despite the removal of blue light, the luminaire’s high CRI facilitates safety and usability in outdoor areas. Through meticulous design and testing, VAILO successfully strikes a balance between ecological sensitivity and human-centric lighting needs, advancing sustainable lighting solutions for wildlife-sensitive environments.
