“Thoughts” is a youth mental health campaign for ReachOut that turns private worries into shared recognition. Young people search ReachOut with questions they can’t say out loud – “Am I gay?”, “Will I ever be loved?”, “What if I fail?” These thoughts can feel isolating, but they’re often widely shared.

  • Young people aren’t alone in what they’re going through, they just feel alone. Many are experiencing similar thoughts at similar times. After lunch bullying queries spike; on Thursdays, it’s study stress and time management; and late at night, it’s sex and dating. The challenge was to make private thoughts visible in a way that felt safe, relatable and genuinely supportive. The response needed to be one that could meet young people in emotionally vulnerable moments without feeling intrusive, clinical or over-explained. Success meant combining emotional sensitivity with scale, while maintaining consistency, care and strong ethical guardrails.

  • The solution was a mental health campaign built around a flexible design system that made unseen worries feel visible and understood.Using emerging technology, a modular design system was created that could be assembled and reassembled across channels. Real worries, de-identified from ReachOut.com, were paired with contextual triggers such as time of day and subject matter. The technology enabled a large number of variations to be generated from human-created assets using restrained art direction, close-up portraiture and direct typography. The volume of executions, combined with real-time context, allowed the campaign to feel relevant, while remaining consistent, safe and recognisably ReachOut.

  • The campaign was designed to increase recognition, reduce stigma and drive visitation across social, digital and outdoor media, including environments that reach young people below the social media age limit. While final reporting is still underway, the first two weeks indicate strong early momentum and an effective cross-channel approach. From 1-14 March, the campaign generated 21,841 website views and reached 19,106 users. Google delivered standout engagement, achieving an engagement rate of 23.32%, while the strongest single day delivered more than 2,300 views. These early results demonstrate immediate cut-through and the strength of contextually relevant communication design.

  • Emerging technology“Thoughts” used emerging technology to amplify its core idea with precision. Without it, the campaign would have been a small set of fixed executions. With it, it became a systematic creative engine.ContextualThe campaign was able to show a young person a thought at the moment it was most likely to resonate. This did more than increase relevance. It shortened the distance to help-seeking and helped to normalise reaching out.RestrainedThe visual language was intentionally restrained to create a calm, open canvas. Close-up portraits with neutral expressions created a non-judgmental space, allowing young people to better see themselves in the work. Typography carried some of the emotional weight too, with each thought appearing large and unavoidable, in the same way a thought lands in your head.SafeHuman review was built into the system to ensure the work remained safe, appropriate and emotionally true.VariableOngoing variability was built into the campaign system so that every execution could feel current, responsive and timely. The result was a design-led system that feels highly personal, yet creatively consistent - combining emotional sensitivity with scale.
