In order to deliver a smaller, more affordable electric car, many design attributes for Model S and Model X, such as the flush door handles, were simplified to make Model 3 cheaper to manufacture. Intelligent design maximises interior space, with an all-glass roof extending from front to back creating a sense of openness from every seat. The minimal interior aesthetic allows all driver controls to be accessed on the central 15-inch touchscreen and the steering wheel. This focus on simple, clean design means that Model 3 has a starting price of only USD$35,000 without compromising on range, technology or performance.

Model 3 is designed to be the safest car ever built. We added state of the art features and new innovations in crash structure design, restraints and airbags, and battery safety to the core of Model 3’s design. Not only has Model 3 achieved a perfect 5-star safety rating in every category and sub-category, but NHTSA’s tests also show that it has the lowest probability of injury of all cars the safety agency has ever tested. Like Model X, Model S, Powerwall and Powerpack, Model 3 is designed to continually improve with regular over-the-air software updates, introducing new features and performance, and enhancing existing functionality via Wi-Fi. This means that Model 3 will become safer and more capable over time. The climate controls for Model 3 involve an innovative design with two intersecting planes of air for vertical control, and lateral fins hidden within the dashboard for horizontal control. The result is a continuous dashboard with a single air slot that enhances the minimalist interior aesthetic while also enabling better air distribution. Model 3 Performance is the quickest car in its class. With a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, it is capable of achieving 0 - 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.
