Terrace Collection The Terrace collection aims to create a quaint, nearly transparent visual language. I wanted to achieve a product that neither stands out nor is lost in its surrounding environment. The formed wire construction is reminiscent of hand sketched gestures.

  • The main design challenge of this product was to produce a wire chair that was actually comfortable. Not just comfortable for a wire chair, a level of comfort you would normally associate with compound curved plywood seating. How could this level of compound curve be created with wire components? The outdoor application also defined the need for visual lightness and transparency. Could we create a nearly transparent visual language that neither stands out nor is lost in its surrounding environment. The formed wire construction is reminiscent of hand sketched gestures?

  • The design solution is deceivingly simple. We created ergonomic surface studies and cut them into sections and then aimed to reinterpret these forms into CNC wire formed components. Through trial and error we found that exaggerating the camber of the curves of each segment calibrated and adjusted for the lack of surface material associated with segmented wire constructed seating surfaces. The chair design has no bracing or frame running underneath the design. By allowing the seat to essentially be the frame. We were able to create less visual clutter and create a slightly transparent feel when viewed from a distance.

  • The chair is designed for the circular economy. The frame is intentionally made from stainless steel and is hand TIG welded for corrosion resistance and recyclability. The feet components were custom designed for this product and are able to be removed simply for end off life recycling and serviceability. This small but impactful component is the difference between the chair frame being able to be recycled or not; and removes the use of toxic glues and adhesives.

  • One of the greatest pleasures as a designer is interacting with your work accidently in your everyday life. I feel such a great sense of responsibility and always hope our work is adding to the space without becoming overbearing; simply becoming part of the ambiance and atmosphere of the surrounding environment.
