  • The core challenge was transforming a dense foundation of research data into a compelling digital experience capable of reaching and resonating with a global audience. The project needed to balance complexity with usability, inviting exploration without overwhelming users. It also had to be technically robust and privacy-conscious, accommodating diverse browsing environments and circumstances. Ultimately, the design had to humanise the data, draw out critical relationships, and support a broader mission of global awareness and advocacy around surveillance and digital privacy.

  • We designed a dynamic, interactive platform powered by a bespoke React front-end around a 3D globe visualistion. The interface presents the data in an immersive manner, users can explore companies, affiliations, and relationships with ease. The visual language is bold and purposeful, combining simplicity with gravitas. A Lite mode is included to ensure compatibility with privacy-focused browsers, while an API layer supports data transparency and developer access. Every interaction was crafted to feel intentional, guiding users through a story that unfolds as they explore, making the invisible world of surveillance more visible and understandable.

  • Surveillance Watch has driven global visibility around surveillance company networks, enabling researchers, journalists, and activists to access and share insights that were previously buried in spreadsheets. The platform has elevated public understanding and empowered action, while also supporting broader discourse on digital rights. Internally, the CMS enables easy updates and expansions, ensuring long-term relevance. Technically, the site’s architecture is lightweight and privacy-conscious. The impact extends beyond the website, it’s a public resource built to support transparency, drive policy conversations, and advocate for a more accountable digital future.

  • Interactive visualisation: Relationships between surveillance companies, funders and government entities are presented in a network-style layout, enabling users to uncover patterns at a glance. Custom search and filters: Advanced filtering and search features help users zero in on specific organisations and countries. Progressive technology: Built with a headless Payload CMS and React.js, the site is fast, scalable and easily maintained by the client. Lite mode: Designed for privacy-first users, this alternate version ensures accessibility on browsers like Tor without sacrificing core functionality. Developer API: An open API gives journalists and developers direct access to the dataset, extending the platform’s reach and utility. Responsive design: Optimised across mobile and desktop, the experience maintains its visual and functional integrity on any device.
