SuperFFD (Super Fast Forward) reimagines search as visual exploration. It replaces keyword boxes with intuitive visual interfaces that reveal relationships between information, enabling users to discover valuable content they didn’t know existed—solving the fundamental problem of “not knowing what you don’t know.

  • Traditional search systems require users to know exactly what they're looking for, limiting serendipitous discovery. This is a major challenge for archives, e-commerce platforms, and knowledge bases, where users may not know the right terminology. SuperFFD addresses this by offering a visually engaging system that encourages exploration without needing specific keywords.

  • SuperFFD turns search into a visual journey through information landscapes. It applies Superdot's Modular Information Design to create comprehensible overviews that invite exploration. Initially developed for Pro Helvetia's Art, Science & Technology Directory, it transformed a complex dataset of 720 organizations into an intuitive experience and has since evolved through iterative user feedback.

  • SuperFFD has improved user engagement and discovery for Pro Helvetia and the Swiss State Archives. Users consistently report finding relevant information they wouldn't have discovered using traditional search. The system provides a playful, exploratory experience that is especially effective in environments with large, complex datasets. Crucially, SuperFFD demonstrates that intuitive navigation—not predictive algorithms—can guide users through information landscapes, making valuable content accessible without prior knowledge of terminology or structure.

  • - Visual Information Aggregation: Presents large and complex datasets as cohesive visual overviews, allowing users to grasp the "big picture" before diving into specifics. - Faceted Visual Navigation: Enables users to intuitively explore multiple dimensions of content—such as categories, topics, or time—without needing predefined search terms. - Serendipitous Discovery: Highlights contextual relationships and proximity between elements, encouraging users to find relevant information they weren't actively seeking. - Playful Interaction: Transforms the search experience into an engaging activity, lowering entry barriers and increasing user satisfaction through curiosity-driven exploration. - Scalable Architecture: Adapts to different content types, organizational needs, and technical structures. Suitable for archives, e-commerce platforms, educational tools, and knowledge bases. - Modular Implementation: Based on Superdot's Modular Information Design methodology, allowing tailored application of visual principles to each project context. - Performance-Optimized Visuals: Maintains speed and responsiveness even when handling thousands of items, ensuring smooth interaction across devices and user profiles.
