Shape and form. My objective was to design a chair that is simple in form, functional and robust. A design with underlining consistency and repetition to tie all the components into a single design. The other design principle I used is not hiding structural elements but integrating it into the overall design.

  • The first was the design had to have an underlining consistency and repetition to tie all the components into a single design. The other design principle is not to hide structural elements but integrating it into the overall design. My starting point of the design was to identify core elements of a typical chair. I determined they are the curve of the backrest (curved pattern 1) and the seat (curves pattern 2), the profile of the seat from a top elevation with rounds at front and square corners at the back (round to corner pattern) and lastly the plane (the ground) that the chair sits on (flat or linear pattern). I used these visual elements throughout the chair (see last three images I have submitted).

  • Functionally the chair is designed to be ergonomically sound and is designed to accommodate the 5 percentile female to the 95 percentile male. I have included a hand grip to be able to easily move the chair and visually it ties in with the slots of the backrest.

  • Smooth surfaces with no corners or protruding components reduces the risk of injury. Having four legs that are shaped so user's weight is always between legs, provides a high degree of stability.

  • Timber is manufactured to +-0.15mm tolerances using CNC machining and aluminium jigs to accurately reproduce components. Components are checked throughout assembly including at completion to meet this specification. Surface finish of materials are inspected to ensure no visible abrasion or bruising of all components. Stainless steel 316 grade is used for all metal components including all screws, bolts and nuts with the exception of the seat base and back rest. Seat base and back rest are made from aluminium to reduce weight. Manufacturer of aluminium components are ISO 9001 accredited.
