  • With only 11% of Australians owning a fully automatic coffee machine (FAC) that uses fresh beans, Rivelia aimed to recruit new users to the category. However, De’Longhi first needed to address barriers identified during research. Most coffee drinkers prefer capsule machines for their simplicity and ease-of-use. Despite acknowledging the superior coffee quality of FACs, people found them intimidating due to their bulky designs and perceived complexity. De’Longhi’s design challenge was to create a more user-friendly and compact FAC to overcome these negative perceptions, and switch capsule users so they can enjoy the superior quality of fresh beans without sacrificing ease-of-use.

  • To appeal to their target, De’Longhi reinvented the design language of their machines, completely re-engineering the core technologies to achieve the smallest possible body without compromising performance. In contrast to existing coffee machines, Rivelia is compact and aesthetically pleasing, with soft, inviting edges and a stylish glossy finish. All without sacrificing advanced features like an AI-driven interface that guides users through every step of the coffee-making process, learning and adapting to their preferences. To further improve user confidence, the key elements of this process are intentionally reinforced in the design, such as the bean hopper, water tank, and milk carafe.

  • Fresh beans are the environmentally-friendly choice for enjoying coffee at home, yet most Australian coffee drinkers opt for capsule machines, which are convenient but less sustainable and more expensive per cup. Rivelia’s user-centric design makes it easier to discover the benefits of fresh beans, by addressing the barriers preventing people from considering the category. Thanks to Rivelia, more people can enjoy superior quality coffee at home, sustainably and cost-effectively. By lowering these barriers to entry, Rivelia also delivers significant commercial impact by allowing De’Longhi to grow their market share and penetration by recruiting new users to their brand.

  • Rivelia has been meticulously designed to deliver an effortless coffee-making experience, focusing on three key pillars: exploration of flavours, personalisation, and immersive design. The innovative Bean Switch System lets users easily explore different flavours by seamlessly switching between two interchangeable bean hoppers. This feature is ideal for multi-person households or those who enjoy experimenting. Also, users can simply choose to grind leftover beans away or use them for one last cup, minimising waste. With 16 fully customisable recipes, Rivelia lets users enjoy their coffee exactly the way they like. Customisation options include adjusting the grind, shot strength, and coffee or milk volume. For less experienced users, the BeanAdapt Technology suggests optimal settings based on the beans used, saving them to personal profiles. Rivelia’s 4 user profiles and AI-powered CoffeeRoutine feature learn individual preferences and tailor the menu accordingly, accommodating different needs throughout the day. The self-cleaning LatteCrema milk carafe effortlessly textures any milk, including plant-based alternatives, with the touch of a button. All these features are accessed through an intuitive full-colour touch screen, guiding users through each step with playful animations and personalised prompts.
