Perpetual by sans [ceuticals] is a waterless, refillable system spanning hair, skin, and body care, designed to eliminate waste at its source. By replacing liquid formulations with concentrated actives, it reduces packaging and emissions while delivering high-performance care through a durable, reusable packaging system engineered for continuous use.

  • The project addresses a fundamental inefficiency in the cosmetics industry: products that begin as dry actives are diluted with water, which can account for up to 95% of total weight. This reduces efficacy while driving the need for preservatives, increasing transport emissions, & locking products into disposable packaging formats. Existing waterless alternatives offer environmental benefits but often fail in use; they are difficult to store, unstable in wet environments, & lack sensory refinement. The challenge was to resolve these holistically across hair, skin, & body applications, removing water without compromising performance & creating a refillable system that is scalable, durable, & intuitive within everyday routines.

  • Perpetual resolves this through an integrated system spanning formulation, packaging, & lifecycle. Water is removed entirely, with actives delivered as concentrated powders, biospheres, and solid oils - enhancing potency while eliminating preservatives & excess weight. A proprietary dispensing mechanism protects contents from moisture, ensuring stability & ease of use in wet environments. This is housed within a modular, refillable canister made from post-consumer materials, engineered for disassembly & continuous reuse across a growing range of hair, skin, & body formulations. Developed over seven years through extensive prototyping, the system reflects an ongoing dialogue between function & form; each refining the other to achieve both performance & permanence.

  • Perpetual shifts impact upstream, addressing inefficiencies at the point of production rather than relying on end-user behaviour. Removing water reduces resource consumption, lowers transport emissions, & eliminates the need for preservatives, while refillable architecture removes single-use packaging from the system. Commercially, it establishes a new category standard across hair, skin, and body care: combining clinical performance with an enduring design that encourages repeat purchase & long-term brand equity. At a societal level, it reframes sustainability as inherent rather than optional. By embedding responsibility into the design itself, Perpetual reduces friction & presents a scalable model for systemic change.

  • Formulations are engineered as concentrated powders, biospheres, and solid oils, each format selected to optimise stability, potency, & delivery. A proprietary solid oil technology enables active delivery without wax-based carriers, improving absorption while maintaining a lightweight, residue-free finish. Central to the system is a moisture-resistant dispensing mechanism, designed to maintain flow, stability, & control in wet environments, addressing a key limitation of previous waterless formats. The external architecture reflects principles of permanence & restraint. The entire packaging system is made from waste. Canisters are constructed from post-consumer recycled materials and designed for disassembly, enabling cleaning, repair, and continuous reuse. Tactility is integral: the weight, resistance, and audible feedback of each interaction are calibrated to create a seamless, refined user experience. Refills are delivered in compostable molded fiber made from leaves, cut down from the sugarcane harvest that would otherwise be destined for landfill. Together, these elements establish a closed-loop, low-impact system that balances performance, longevity, and environmental responsibility, without compromise.
