ONTAP ROAM Off Grid Water System

Water is the first thing that runs out when exploring. The design brief for ROAM was simple: Improve the way people can access and manage water in an off-grid scenario, and design a fully portable off grid water system that can be used for showering.From the beginning, ONTAP wanted to keep the product dimensions the same as a traditional jerry can: 179mm x 348mm x 460mm. The key challenge for the design team was finding the balance between maximising water capacity, creating excellent ergonomics, usability and practicality, all with the goal of pricing ROAM competitively.

Users want to stay off grid for longer and have drinking water on tap. ROAM achieves this through a modular design where the pump housing unclips and is shared across multiple tanks. This breakthrough concept presents new opportunities and allows users to extend their drinking water supply. The compact design also fits into jerry can holders, bolstering its portability.Rigorous testing of critical design elements such as the pump and latches for strength was conducted during the development process to meticulously evaluate every part of the design. This allowed the team to refine and optimise ROAM before commencing production.
