Oasis is an at-home sleep nearable designed for people with insomnia who struggle to fall asleep due to intrusive thoughts and mental hyperactivity. Taking the form of a wall sconce, it delivers CBT-informed breathing guidance the moment the user switches off their light, seamlessly integrated into their night routines.

  • Over 500 million adults globally live with clinically relevant insomnia, according to a 2022 review in Sleep Medicine Clinics, yet insomnia disorder remains widely normalised and under-treated. The global sleep medications market, valued at AUD $29.9 billion in 2023 by Global Market Insights, reflects a population relying on short-term relief in the absence of accessible alternatives. Existing products like sleep trackers provide data without actual intervention, while sleep apps require screen engagement that compounds the problem. The challenge was to design a long-term, home-based solution that delivers clinically grounded sleep therapy precisely when and where it is needed.

  • Research with patients revealed that switching off the light is a conditioned anxiety trigger — the moment people know they will begin the struggle to sleep. Oasis's interaction design is inspired by this, transforming this moment into the start of therapy. Oasis reimagines the familiar object: beginning as a bedside lamp that then pivots off like a light switch, revealing a speaker that delivers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) informed breathing guidance through ambient sound — no screen, and no extra steps. A radar sensor monitors heart rate contactlessly, adjusting its sound in real time to each user's physiological state throughout the night.

  • Oasis makes evidence-based sleep therapy accessible within the home, giving the underserved majority of insomnia sufferers a non-invasive, sustainable alternative to a global sleep medications market worth over AUD $29.9 billion. By helping people manage symptoms early, it reduces the likelihood of escalation into severe clinical insomnia, easing long-term pressure on healthcare systems. At a population level, the downstream effects are significant: better sleep is directly linked to improved workplace productivity, reduced absenteeism, and lower rates of anxiety and depression. For the individual, Oasis reshapes their relationship with rest, restoring the emotional, social, and professional capacity that insomnia quietly erodes.

  • Oasis operates in two modes. In light mode, it emits a warm 2500K glow as the user winds down. A gentle push pivots it like a switch into sleep mode, where rhythmic ambient sound plays, pulsing in slow, wave-like volumes for the user to follow with their breathing, grounding the CBT practice of paced breathing in a passive format that requires no prior training. An integrated radar sensor monitors heart rate non-invasively. As the user falls asleep their heart rate lowers, Oasis observes this and lowers the volume. If elevated heart rate returns signaling a racing mind, it rises again, delivering personalised, real-time intervention.A sunrise wake-up function gradually brightens the lamp over thirty minutes, easing the user into wakefulness. During daylight hours, a companion app allows users to customise their sound profile and receive habit suggestions based on their sleep data — but its role ends there. When sleep mode activates, the app sends a lock screen message discouraging phone use, preserving the screen-free integrity of the night.Sustainability is embedded throughout: an aluminium chassis for long-term durability, a removable panel for easy servicing, and interchangeable magnetic covers that allow the aesthetic to evolve with the user’s space over time.
