The brief was to simplify one of the most challenging daily parenting tasks: safely securing a child in the car. While child restraint use in Australia is high, incorrect installation and misuse remain common due to poor accessibility and complex operation. Traditional rear-facing restraints can be physically demanding, increasing the likelihood of error during daily use. The design challenge was to create a rotating child restraint that improves accessibility, ergonomics and ease of use while meeting strict safety requirements. Key challenges included integrating rotation with a rear-facing tether system and reducing tether interference when loading and securing the child.

RYLO was developed through a human-centred design process focused on improving accessibility and ease of use without compromising safety. A smooth rotational mechanism allows caregivers to turn the seat towards the car door, reducing awkward lifting while improving visibility when securing the child. A key innovation integrates the top tether into the base, keeping it stationary and eliminating the need for repeated adjustment during use. This reduces interaction friction and supports more consistent correct installation. Engineers integrated these features within a reinforced structure meeting stringent safety standards, while iterative testing refined rotation, recline and ergonomic support for safer, simpler use.

RYLO improves everyday travel by making child car seat use safer, more accessible and less physically demanding.
