The new website for Newcastle Art Gallery transforms a traditional gallery interface into a public-facing cultural experience. Built on principles of radical accessibility, it uses scale, hierarchy, and interactivity to make art, exhibitions, and information more accessible and engaging for the people of Newcastle.

  • As Newcastle Art Gallery prepared for a major expansion, its digital presence no longer reflected its scale, ambition, or civic role. The existing website was fragmented, difficult to navigate, and structured around internal logic rather than public needs. The challenge was to create a website that could serve diverse audiences — from first-time visitors to arts professionals — while expressing a clear and compelling identity. It needed to balance institutional credibility with openness, support both storytelling and utility, and establish a new standard for how a regional cultural institution presents itself in a digital context.

  • The solution expands on the Gallery’s brand system to creating a unified relationship between identity and experience.A grid derived from the masthead underpins the entire UI, enabling dynamic layouts, clear hierarchy, and a sense of scale. This structure supports a simplified information architecture focused on key user needs: exhibitions, collection, and visiting.Scale is used deliberately to enhance accessibility through generous spacing, bold typographic contrast, and oversized interactive elements that make navigation intuitive and inclusive. The result is a flexible, editorial platform that supports both storytelling and everyday use, while remaining consistent, legible, and easy to manage.

  • The website repositions the Gallery as a contemporary, accessible cultural institution, strengthening its connection with the public at a pivotal moment of growth.By simplifying navigation and increasing clarity, it improves access to exhibitions, events, and the collection, supporting increased engagement and visitation. Its inclusive design broadens audience reach, making the Gallery more approachable to a wider community. The website also provides long-term value through a scalable system that the internal team can evolve. It establishes a new benchmark for regional gallery websites, demonstrating how digital experiences can actively shape public perception and participation.

  • At the core of the website is a grid system translated directly from the Gallery’s visual identity. This creates structural consistency while enabling flexible, expressive layouts that respond to different types of content.Scale is used as a primary visual device. Large typographic shifts, generous spacing, and deliberately oversized buttons create a sense of radical accessibility, making the interface intuitive for a broad audience.Colour is applied to differentiate exhibitions and guide users through content. Featured shows are given prominence, while smaller exhibitions retain clarity and presence within the hierarchy.Exhibition pages function as editorial experiences, extending the physical gallery into the digital space through layered content and narrative structure.Subtle interactive elements, including reflective behaviours and moments of play, are embedded throughout the interface. These details enrich the experience without compromising usability, rewarding deeper engagement. The CMS and component system enable the Gallery team to manage and expand content independently, ensuring the platform remains sustainable and adaptable as the institution evolves.
