  • The National Library of Australia required a complete redesign and rebuild of its website to meet modern user expectations and government digital standards. The project responded to challenges around accessibility, legacy technology, navigation complexity and content sprawl. It needed to integrate with existing services such as Trove and the Catalogue, while supporting a scalable design system across the Library's extended digital properties.

  • Delivered in partnership with the National Library of Australia and Folk (who led early discovery), the project was designed and developed by Digital Garden using an inclusive, user-centred approach. Built on Drupal 10 and hosted on Platform.sh, the site features an atomic design system, improved IA, dark and light modes, and enhanced editorial tools. Close collaboration, iterative UX, usability testing and technical innovation ensured a solution that is flexible, future-ready and WCAG 2.1 AA compliant.

  • The new website has significantly improved public access to the Library’s collections and services, streamlined digital operations, and strengthened the Library’s digital presence. Recognised by the 2025 Australian Web Award for Best Government Website, the project demonstrates leadership in accessible, user-focused design for the public sector.

  • Custom Drupal 10 build with flexible content architecture Fully accessible (WCAG 2.1 AA) with dark and light mode options Modular atomic design system built for reuse across NLA digital products Seamless integrations with Catalogue, Trove, and the NLA Bookshop Extensive UX testing, tree testing and stakeholder validation Enhanced editorial control and media management for Library staff Designed and developed by Digital Garden Built on Platform.sh for performance, scalability and sustainability
