  • The project responded to the need to upgrade SafeGauge’s existing wireless multitool, which offered limited functionality but was highly intuitive and required no training. The key challenge was introducing advanced features, such as graphing, reporting, and data analysis, without compromising simplicity and usability. The solution needed to be immediately understandable for a broad user base, from diesel mechanics with minimal technical experience to supervisors seeking deeper insights. Leveraging an existing tablet provided environmental compliance but introduced constraints, including hardware limitations like Bluetooth positioning, which restricted interface orientation. Balancing usability, functionality, and hardware constraints was central to meeting the design brief.

  • The design process began by translating the existing UI onto a tablet to validate hardware performance and portrait usability before expanding functionality. A new interface identity was developed, softening bold colours to reduce cognitive load as features increased. Key functionality like graphing, reporting, and advanced data visualisation (snapshots, overlays, comparison points), was introduced to enhance fault detection and decision-making. Development followed an iterative cycle between designers and engineers, enabling continuous testing and refinement. Post-launch, the solution evolved through field testing, training feedback, and integration with new sensors. The MultiTool Pro is a scalable platform for advanced diagnostics and reporting.

  • Following launch, sales rapidly shifted toward MultiTool Pro, demonstrating strong commercial impact. By leveraging an off-the-shelf rugged tablet, the business streamlined procurement and reduced hardware manufacturing complexity, allowing focus on software innovation. Connectivity via WiFi and SIM enabled scalable fleet deployment, including rollout across 100+ kits at Hastings Deering sites. Over-the-air updates ensure customers receive new features instantly, extending product lifespan. Remote device management through Samsung Knox improves support efficiency, while integrated reporting provides valuable insights into real-world sensor usage. Overall, the solution enhances operational efficiency, scalability, and safety outcomes for heavy industry maintenance environments.

  • MultiTool Pro is built around a consistent, intuitive workflow across all testing scenarios, ensuring familiarity regardless of task complexity. The process follows three stages: sensor setup, live testing, and reporting. Users connect sensors, assign nicknames, and define tolerances, then monitor real-time data through digital readouts or live graphs, including min/max tracking and zeroing for relative measurements.A key feature is advanced graphing, which transforms raw sensor data into actionable insights. Visualisation enables rapid identification of anomalies, critical for diagnosing faults in heavy machinery. Enhanced analysis tools include snapshots to capture key moments, point selection with automatic delta calculations, and graph overlays that allow comparison of up to two sensors live and four during reporting.Reporting functionality enables seamless export of results as PDF or CSV, supporting efficient communication and documentation across teams.Customisable templates further streamline workflows by allowing organisations to predefine sensor setups, naming conventions, and test parameters. This ensures consistency with OEM procedures, reduces setup time, and improves data quality across repeated tests.Together, these features create a powerful yet accessible platform that balances simplicity with advanced diagnostic capability.
