  • MORE
  • The design challenge was to reduce the volume of fabric offcuts and other material waste being sent to landfill by creating a meaningful new end-of-life pathway for these resources. At the same time, the product needed to communicate King Living’s commitment to sustainability in a way that was tangible, customer-facing and emotionally engaging. This sustainability story could not come at the expense of quality, finish or safety. The product therefore had to meet the stringent compliance and regulatory requirements for children’s soft toys across global markets while maintaining a premium appearance and construction standard consistent with the King Living brand.

  • The solution was to transform selected production offcuts into a children’s soft toy: the King Teddy Bear. Yowie and Futuro fabrics were chosen because they were both visually and structurally suited to the product, while also supporting compliance with global toy safety standards. Yowie offered a soft, fur-like tactility, while Futuro provided a contrasting suede-like finish for details such as foot pads and the nose. The teddy bear also utilises polyester filling and glass beads already used in existing mass-production processes, allowing the product to be developed without introducing entirely new fill materials or manufacturing systems.

  • King Teddy Bear creates impact by turning production offcuts into a valuable and desirable product rather than sending those materials to landfill. It improves utilisation of Yowie and Futuro offcuts, while also making better use of existing polyester filling and glass bead resources within the factory environment. Beyond manufacturing impact, the product gives King Living a visible and accessible way to communicate its sustainability values to customers and the broader public. Its impact is also social: a portion of revenue from every sale is donated to Sydney Children’s Hospital, extending the product’s value beyond the business and into the community.

  • King Teddy Bear is defined by its thoughtful use of existing materials, premium tactile qualities and safe, high-quality construction. It utilises offcuts from Yowie and Futuro fabrics already used in production, helping divert otherwise wasted material from landfill. Yowie was selected for its soft, fur-like texture, giving the toy a warm and comforting tactile experience not commonly found in standard teddy bears. Futuro was chosen for contrast panels such as the foot pads and nose, where its suede-like finish helps distinguish these details while elevating the overall look and feel of the product. The teddy bear also uses polyester filling and glass beads that are already available within existing factory processes. This improves material utilisation without requiring entirely new internal fill systems. The glass beads add weight and stability, allowing the teddy bear to sit upright while contributing to a more premium, substantial feel in hand. Importantly, the strength and integrity of the seams were carefully resolved to meet the safety standards and regulations required for children’s soft toys in global markets. This ensures the product delivers not only a strong sustainability narrative, but also the quality, finish and compliance expected of a globally saleable children’s product.
