#GoKindly Signature Pillow

The brief was to create a modern bedroom pillow at an affordable price point, ethically sourced. To be suitable for 80% of sleepers. To be designed for modern lives - hard wearing, practically constructed, machine washable and recyclable at end of life to ensure circularity. Use the proceeds to reinvest into housing and homelessness services, meaning affordability and ethics must not be traded off against profitability. Find a sweet spot of a well-designed, high quality, affordable pillow which delivers a beautiful night’s sleep.

It was designed with customer centricity at its core. It was tested in-house for 6 months, to be machine washable and have a long lifespan. Its height was trialled and tested to ensure it met 80% of sleepers needs. The gusset was designed to ensure the pillow held its shape for as long as possible. Its materials and stitching created to high standards - 100% cotton outer and recycled poly inner. The materials were designed to be separated easily, so it could be returned and re-spun at end of life to end bedding waste. At the time no recycling program existed.

Five years ago, bedding basics were not widely sold online, and bedding circularity was unheard of. To design a bedroom pillow which did not contribute to landfill was radical. #GoKindly became the first to offer pillow recycling in Australia, a program which was built in parallel to the Signature Pillow. No BCorp or social enterprise Bedroom Pillow was on the market, and pillows came from big box, mass produced stores. The Signature Pillow has changed the game for pillow waste reduction/circularity in Australia. It is long lasting, 50% of proceeds support social change, it does not contribute to landfill.

Design features include a tag which space to record the sleepers name and the date of first use. This helps modern families keep track of whose pillow is whose. The Signature pillow is not packaged in plastic, and all packaging is home-grade compostable. The Signature pillow was designed as the first product for #GoKindly, to demonstrate that profit-for-purpose was possible. It was designed to be kind to the world in as many touchpoints as possible. Long lasting, well-constructed, recyclable, fair wages paid across the supply chain, provide employment to marginalised women. The Signature pillow is an enabler of kindness in bedding basics.
