Giant Gilgie is a large-scale themed playground inspired by the wildlife of wetlands ecosystems. Designed for children aged 3–12, the sculptural play environment translates the form of the freshwater crayfish into an immersive experience that combines climbing, sliding, balancing, and sensory activities to encourage exploration, imagination, and inclusive social play.

  • Mary Carroll Park and Wetlands is an important ecological area that supports diverse wildlife within an urban environment. One of its most recognizable species is the freshwater crayfish (Djilgi), which inhabits rivers, streams, and wetlands across the south-west and survives seasonal droughts by digging burrows to reach groundwater. The design challenge was to transform this ecological story into an engaging playground that could accommodate high numbers of users while offering layered play experiences. The structure was intended to encourage exploration, imaginative storytelling, and inclusive participation, while also meeting international safety standards and ensuring durability within a demanding outdoor park environment.

  • The Giant Gilgie play structure translates the form and movement of the freshwater crayfish into a sculptural play architecture. Curving structural elements form an interconnected spatial network of climbing routes, platforms, bridges, and slides that children can access from multiple directions.High-strength rope climbing systems, HDPE panels, and corrosion-resistant steel components provide durability while maintaining a visually lightweight appearance. Musical play elements introduce sensory engagement and rhythm-based interaction.Ground-level play panels and sensory-accessible elements support inclusive play, enabling children with different abilities to participate while exploring the structure’s multi-route pathways and layered spatial play experiences.

  • The project demonstrates how themed playgrounds can connect children with local ecological stories while enhancing community parks. Inspired by the freshwater crayfish found in nearby wetlands, the structure transforms wildlife education into an interactive play experience. The design accommodates many children simultaneously while supporting diverse developmental outcomes. Climbing networks strengthen physical abilities such as coordination, balance, and upper body strength, while navigating interconnected routes encourages spatial awareness and problem-solving.Inclusive play elements allow children with different abilities to participate together, while cooperative activities promote communication, teamwork, and imaginative storytelling in shared public environments.

  • The Giant Gilgie play structure is designed as a multifunctional playground environment that combines high play capacity with diverse developmental experiences within a sculptural form inspired by wetland wildlife. The structure incorporates more than 40 play values across 8 play stations and over 12 activity types, allowing children to engage in varied physical and imaginative play. Key components include rope climbing systems, disk climbing pathways, vertical rope challenges, slides, rope bridges, panel games, and interactive musical elements. These activities support multiple aspects of childhood development. Climbing networks improve physical strength, coordination, agility, and balance, while navigating interconnected routes develops spatial awareness and decision-making skills. Interactive panel games and musical elements stimulate sensory exploration and creativity.Shared climbing routes and cooperative challenges encourage communication, teamwork, and social interaction. Ground-level play panels and sensory-accessible elements support inclusive play, enabling children of different abilities to participate in the experience.Durable materials ensure long-term performance in outdoor environments. HDPE panels and rotationally molded polyethylene components provide impact resistance and UV stability, while reinforced steel-core ropes deliver high tensile strength. The structural system uses a laser-cut steel frame with modular installation, enabling efficient assembly, maintenance, and long-term durability.
