At the project's outset, design concepts were derived from insight research to solve pain-points and unmet needs of users of large 3D printers. A challenge for the design was to express ‘operational reliability' and ‘simplicity in-use’, which are factors largely missing from existing 3D printers. To become a game-changing choice for schools to industries alike, the product needed to deliver the highest levels of plug-and-print reliability and repeatable accuracy, delivered at an affordable price.
The fabWeaver delivers reliability and simplicity in-use through its discreet ‘Worktop’ that can be used for effortless part handling. Unlike traditional printers with small screen interfaces, the whole front face of the fabWeaver printer is an intuitive LED indicator that communicates with its user from afar. Allowing people to manage operations while getting on with other important tasks. The large glass door was engineered to improve print accessibility and visibility, all whilst maintaining optimal printing temperatures within the heated chamber and being safe to touch. The 7-inch touchscreen with a bespoke GUI was also positioned for easy interaction.
