When designing Boost Cygnett asked “What do users need from this product which are not provided with existing market options?” Their research showed not only were users demanding a greater sense of security through being able to safely charge portable electronic devices whenever and wherever they needed, they also demanded the autonomy to choose how. Not happy with a device which looked and performed like just another office ”tech” accessory, the challenge was to provide a powerbank which could travel with a person throughout their day, on their terms.

Boost ventures from the traditional “techy” appearance, offering a sculpted and ergonomic form in a range of colors. More lifestyle/fashion accessory than electronic gadget, it speaks to user autonomy, becoming more like “wearable lifestyle tech”. Without surrendering simple plug and play functionality, Cygnett offers a broadened sense of security with a seven segment battery level display and lanyard through-hole. With a lanyard or carabiner, users can choose to attach Boost to anything, from carpenters belt to hiking pack. Adding the through-hole without compromising structural integrity proved a technical challenge and important safety consideration for Cygnett to overcome.

By closely focusing on the needs of the power bank user, and while optimising and maintaining the strength of a simple and reliable experience, Boost 5k speaks to users’ lifestyle needs of enhanced portability, autonomy and personalisation. By enhancing the bond between user and product, it remains relevant for longer, increasing the lifespan of use and in turn reducing waste. The retained simplicity of the design also lends itself to efficient production and healthy commercial returns.

By optimising familiar power bank assembly processes, the new Boost 5k efficiently offers more to the user without the need for additional productions steps or parts. The lanyard through-hole and enhanced styling are simple changes to the design’s external geometry that do not require additional materials, labor, or processing.
