Caroma Smart Hospital Technology is a unique IoT eco system controlling water delivery and operation of showers and tapware in hospitals. Designed to improve patient/staff experience, enhancing safety through automated thermal disinfection and flushing reducing Legionella and other risks. This lowers whole-of-life costs via digital management, supporting long-term OTA upgrades.

  • The main design challenge was to develop an advance IoT eco system of digital technologies that will reduce maintenance and management costs of a hospital over 25 plus years. This needed to be achieved with an increased patient /staff experience together with the development of a more effective solution to prevent legionella outbreaks. During the five years of working on the project, we found it necessary to produce a working prototype of a typical hospital bedroom and ensuite. This greatly assisted the team in overcoming complex performance problems with signal interference and other functional issues experienced during this complex development.

  • The final design is globally unique, delivering automated digital thermal disinfection for hospitals to better protect water supplies from Legionella and other microbes. When activated by the app, the system delivers water at 62 C via an electronic mixing valve to showers and touch-free tapware for10 minutes minimum. A failsafe person sensor will stop the cycle if anyone enters the area. A cold/warm-water hygiene flush function is also provided to purge the system on demand. Compared with manual, plumber-operated thermal disinfection, the process is more cost efficient, repeatable, and less disruptive to patients, staff, and operations.
