The BCNA website, A vital source for breast cancer support in Australia, neared obsolescence. Recognising this, BCNA aimed to transform it into a robust digital hub, offering swift access to vital resources, fostering a supportive community for those affected by breast cancer, ensuring easy navigation and crucial information dissemination.

  • BCNA has produced an effective ecosystem of support tools and resources, developed gradually, over many years. This process, while natural, ultimately resulted in a range of technology solutions which led to different and inconsistent digital experiences. Based on this history, the BCNA team’s ambition, and the challenge of this new platform, was to build a system that would improve consistency and create the simplest pathway possible to relevant information. Their desire was to also incorporate as many of their different tools and resources into one experience as possible (with the intention of migrating the rest over in time).

  • The process of developing this platform has resulted in a fresh, new experience that better communicates BCNA’s offering, while helping those new to breast cancer quickly find the right information based on their circumstances. Improvements have included: An unified Information & Resources Centre, which allows visitors to search and filter all information resource formats from one convenient location A more refined navigation and distinct site areas for different types of visitors (e.g. those who have been diagnosed, people interested in providing support, etc.) A homepage triage area, which helps visitors quickly find information targeted to their particular situation

  • The new platform has been live for approximately six months now and the site has already seen a significant increase in traffic, improved clarity (as determined by a reduction in users contacting BCNA for assistance finding information), and a high number of visitors using the newly designed Information & Resources Centre. This redesign, which is part of a larger future vision, has been successful to the point that additional planned improvements are already in the works, with the goal of incorporating even more of the BCNA resources ecosystem into this singular experience.

  • Information & Resources Centre BCNA provides resources in many formats to ensure information caters to as many people as possible. Formats such articles, videos, podcasts and downloadable documents were previously featured in different locations, so to reduce effort when looking for information on a topic, we introduced a new Information & Resources Centre. From this hub, visitors can search and filter information based on their own scenario as well as attributes such as topic and media format. Audience triage and landing pages For visitors who aren’t sure where to begin, or want to get to information targeted to their situation, we set up a new audience triage section on the homepage. Each triage link targets a key audience and navigates directly to a dashboard page with relevant information curated specifically to the needs of that user type. Homepage and Navigation Similar to most not-for-profits, BCNA has the ongoing challenge of putting their member community first, while also trying to capture the attention of those who might provide support. One of the biggest challenges of this new site prioritising information for individuals going through a cancer experience, while also ensuring that information for those wishing to provide support was available as well.
