The design challenge can be summarised as: How do we design a mobile filmmaking application that is recognisably a Blackmagic camera while also being optimised for mobile? What ideas can we implement in this application that will turn a consumer product into a serious tool for filmmakers of all levels? What unique opportunities does mobile filmmaking present to make significant and real improvements to the production and post-production workflow? What part will this app play in Blackmagic Design’s core mission of ’democratizing the TV and film industry, aiding the emergence of new careers in mobile filmmaking and mobile journalism?

Our familiar camera OS has been reimagined for the mobile format. Primary controls are arranged on the side of the screen, allowing for single-handed operation. A multi-level drawer system contains the individual controls, with adjustments made via a vertical strip. Catering to film makers of all levels, professional features such as Blackmagic Color Science, HDMI monitoring and SSD recording are all included. A brand-new camera-to-cloud workflow allows recorded clips to be instantly transported to a DaVinci Resolve project. Through thoughtful design, professional features, and flexible workflows, Blackmagic Camera continues to support filmmakers as they progress through their professional journey.

The chat function adds a direct line of communication, supporting efficient and seamless collaboration between all stakeholders. Multiple camera operators, editors, and colorists can all communicate instantly via the chat tab on the Blackmagic Camera app, or from within Blackmagic’s post production software, DaVinci Resolve.
