  • The design challenge for Big Glow was to create a large, glowing light that redefines the classic spherical archetype while becoming an authentically memorable design icon. The brief required a sustainable, high-performance lighting solution that marries Australian heritage with modern innovation. Supported by Woolmark, the project needed to transform wool into a high-performing lighting material, leveraging its natural benefits while ensuring eco-conscious practices. The design had to evoke emotional resonance, bridging cultural contrasts between Australia’s intense sunlight and Europe’s cosy interiors, and appeal to a global audience as a symbol of responsible luxury.

  • The design solution for Big Glow involved intensive research and development, supported by Woolmark, to blend Australian wool with plant-derived compostable bioplastic. This innovative materiality offers acoustic benefits, warm light diffusion, and tactile softness, evoking emotional resonance. Aesthetically, Big Glow’s distinctive “shoulders” create a memorable silhouette, reinterpreting the classic glowing sphere archetype into a sculptural statement. The design process included refining the wool-bioplastic blend and engineering efficient packaging to reduce environmental impact. Despite material complexity, the team successfully created a certified compostable product that balances sustainability with luxury and visual impact.
