  • 2050 Furniture addresses the ecological crisis and society's structural waste problem. The innovative production avoids virgin resource use and protects natural ecosystems, and the result is unique ethical furniture. The biggest design challenge was to work with the extremely diverse resources from local waste streams. Wood waste is random and unstructured, and therefore difficult to base a furniture production on. Choosing to work with strict ecological and social ethics – while establishing a structure outside the traditional structure, and creating a product competitive in the market – was a big challenge.

  • FjordMoods has developed 2050 Furniture – a local, cooperative structure for sourcing, sorting, and processing structurally worthless locally wasted wood into furniture. The design solution turns a waste problem into a resource story. FjordMoods managed to unify the diverse waste pile through designing a building block and intermediate parts for furniture. 2050 Furniture is about up-cycling wood, not down-cycling. The design of the Sondre chair allows a methodical, low-threshold production process – accessible for people with varied abilities. 2050 Furniture is a scalable, inclusive, and environmentally responsible design solution. The Sondre chair is the first tangible result of this process.

  • With 2050 Furniture FjordMoods creates impact on three levels: environmentally, by reducing wood waste and preserving natural resources and ecosystems; socially, by offering inclusive jobs and training in sheltered employment; and commercially, by demonstrating a scalable model for circular, local furniture production, and by offering companies an ethical option for furnishing. 2050 Furniture is a local value chain bringing back production to a small community and to the Norwegian market. 2050 Furniture shows how design can drive systemic change through collaboration, sustainable design, and social inclusion.

  • Environmentally friendly: Made from 100 % locally reclaimed wood from local waste streams, preserving virgin resources and natural ecosystems. Made with non-toxic chemicals. Unique character: Each Sondre chair has a unique look, since it is made from reclaimed wood with varying types, textures, and colors sourced from local waste streams. Circular design: Materials are up-cycled, and the Sondre chair is made for longevity, with components that are easy to repair. Inclusive production: The Sondre chair is designed for low-threshold manufacturing, enabling meaningful work and training for individuals in sheltered employment. Inclusive design: 2050 Furniture manages to work with materials from the chaotic wood waste pile by embracing its diversity. This is done through turning the wood into a building block, which is laminated into various intermediate parts for furniture. Local value chain: All materials and partners are locally based, minimizing transportation and fostering regional collaboration. Enables positive impact: Creating less consumption is not done overnight. 2050 Furniture offers a sustainable consumption alternative – a long-lasting product that is true to strong environmental and social values. Long life: The timeless, eclectic look and the stories behind each Sondre chair help people connect emotionally with the product, ensuring its longevity.
