  • Around 1% of the world population requires a wheelchair for their mobility. That equates to over 200,000 people in Australia alone. One of the most popular accessories for manual wheelchairs is power-assist. The only issue is that current systems can cost over $10,000 new, and once bought there is little support to keep them running. One major reason for this high cost is the lack of competition, allowing companies to charge exorbitant prices, especially since programs like the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) often cover the expense.

  • SCOOT power assist is designed around readily-available off-the-shelf components that can easily be replaced by the end user or common bicycle/scooter shops. It runs on on an electric scooter powertrain, receiving its power from power tool batteries that can easily be swapped out. If a component or battery fails, the user won't have to wait weeks or months for a fix. New components and batteries can be purchased locally and have the unit up and running in days instead of months.

  • Power assist is a device that attaches to a standard manual wheelchair and helps to push the user around. It adds an amount of independence to the user as it can significantly increase the user’s ability by increasing the range and capability of the user. For some users, power assist can mean the difference between maintaining their independence and relying on others to complete basic daily tasks. SCOOT helps ensure that more wheelchair users have access to this life-changing technology by making it more affordable to both purchase and maintain.

  • SCOOT runs on power tool batteries and electric scooter components. It is designed to be easy and affordable to be purchased and serviced. It also has safety features built into it such as safe-stop, that ensures the unit doesn't overpower the user, potentially pushing them into an unsafe situation. By using industry standard parts the price is able to be kept low, allowing more people to have access to this technology without having to go through NDIS.
