The Hilton Chanter reimagines the traditional bagpipe practice chanter as a professional performance instrument. With consistent tuning, rich tone, and a moisture-resistant Mountain reed seat, it enables longer, uninterrupted play. These innovations lower barriers to bagpiping, expanding access and elevating the chanter from a learning tool to a concert-ready instrument.

  • Practice chanters are typically inconsistent, poorly tuned, and not taken seriously as performance instruments. Traditionally limited to practice use due to poor sound quality and materials, chanters weren't intended for stage use. Competitors suffer from poor tuning, heavy construction, and a lack of cultural expression. Modern Piping aimed to overcome this by designing the first chanter purpose-built for performance—featuring accurate pitch, rich tone, and professional-grade quality. The challenge was creating a high-quality, modern instrument that honoured the traditional Scottish chanter while balancing heritage and contemporary design—visually and acoustically—to elevate the chanter into a serious, standalone musical instrument.

  • The solution was to elevate the chanter from a basic practice tool into a standalone performance instrument by improving the quality—materially, acoustically, and experientially—while removing common barriers faced by pipers. High-quality materials enhance acoustic resonance, with critical performance elements such as bore profile, tone, hole positioning, reed chamber volume, and internal taper were carefully calibrated by world-renowned bagpiper Lincoln Hilton to deliver consistent tuning, balance, and playability. Tuned to equal temperament, it ensures every note aligns with standard Western pitches—ideal for both practice and performance and enabling both solo and ensemble performance.

  • The Hilton Chanter elevates Modern Piping’s brand, praised globally as the “best sounding” chanter on the market. Its first limited run of 200 instruments sold out in record time to pipers around the world. Historically untuned and used only for practice, the chanter has been reimagined as a performance-grade instrument—removing the need for drone tuning and lowering the entry barrier to Scottish bagpiping. This shift has had a meaningful impact on the piping community, encouraging longer practice, improved technique, and broader participation. Crafted to be inherited—not discarded—honouring tradition while redefining how this historic instrument is played today.

  • Professional Sound Quality and Equal Temperament Tuning: This is the first chanter designed to equal temperament, allowing pipers to play in tune with standard Western instruments—enabling ensemble performance and sharper ear training. Performance-Ready Design: This chanter is engineered as a standalone instrument for live performance—eliminating the need to use tune drones and encouraging new and emerging players. Innovative Moisture Management: The "Mountain" reed seat and split mouthpiece uniquely prevent fluid build-up, a common issue that interrupts performance and tone, allowing longer play without tonal compromise. O-Ring Seals: Rather than waxed hemp, the silicone o-rings provide a tighter, more reliable and maintenance free seal. Tool-Free Maintenance: A new threaded sandwich construction promotes maintenance over replacement, increasing the lifespan of the instrument. Superior Materials: High-performance materials such as high grade aluminium, solid brass, engineered acetal polymer, stainless steel mouthpiece, medical grade silicone seals, and solid walnut timber components contribute to enhanced tone, prolonged contact and heritage appeal. Materials are food-safe and appropriate for prolonged oral and hand contact while playing. Precision Engineering and Ergonomics: Critical performance elements like bore profile, reed chamber volume, and tone hole geometry have been refined for maximum tuning stability, consistency across reeds, and improved comfort.
