  • H2p0le responds to the challenge of reducing preventable search and rescue (SAR) callouts in New Zealand’s backcountry. The brief called for a product that supports SAR efforts, but research revealed a greater opportunity: preventing emergencies before they occur. The design had to address either dehydration, exposure, or invisibility —all key risk factors—while remaining compact and intuitive. Major challenges included integrating a water filtration system without adding bulk and maximising functionality without compromising ergonomics. By rethinking existing gear and applying lean manufacturing principles, H2p0le successfully meets the brief through a prevention-first strategy that empowers users and reduces pressure on SAR.

  • H2p0le solves the brief by transforming a standard hiking pole into a compact, multi-functional survival tool that addresses three key SAR risk factors: dehydration, exposure, and excess pack weight. Early research and interviews with SAR professionals shifted the focus from rescue response to emergency prevention. Key design breakthroughs included embedding a six-method water filtration system into the handle and converting the wrist strap into six metres of paracord. A major challenge was maintaining ergonomics while integrating new functions. Lean manufacturing principles guided material use and form. Through testing, iteration, and systems-thinking, H2p0le became a refined, prevention-driven solution for safer exploration.

  • H2p0le delivers meaningful impact across societal, environmental, and commercial dimensions. Socially, it reduces preventable SAR incidents by equipping outdoor users with essential survival tools in one lightweight, intuitive product. Environmentally, it embraces lean manufacturing to minimise waste, reduce plastic use, and extend product lifespan through multifunctionality. Commercially, H2p0le consolidates multiple outdoor items into one durable investment, offering strong value to consumers and potential for market growth. It supports New Zealand’s outdoor culture by encouraging safer exploration without discouraging participation. By shifting from emergency response to risk prevention, H2p0le promotes personal responsibility, public safety, and smarter product design for the outdoors.

  • H2p0le is a multifunctional hiking pole designed to prevent outdoor emergencies through smart, space-efficient design. Its key feature is a six-method water filtration system built into the handle, using a 0.1-micron hollow fibre membrane filter that removes 99.999% of bacteria and contaminants. This allows users to safely drink from natural sources while reducing carried weight. The wrist strap transforms into six metres of paracord, enabling shelter construction, gear securing, or emergency use. The pole itself doubles as structural shelter support. Ergonomically refined, the grip is shaped and sized for comfort and reduced fatigue. Materials such as cork, silicone, and aluminium ensure lightweight durability and comfort in varied conditions. A twist-lock mechanism with visual stop lines enhances user safety, while reflective branding and blaze orange detailing improve visibility in low light—crucial for SAR efforts. H2p0le’s compact design consolidates critical outdoor tools, reducing redundancy and promoting self-reliance. Lean manufacturing principles guided its development, optimising existing space to maintain minimalism without sacrificing function. The design prioritises safety, sustainability, and intuitive use—delivering a product that is not only technically innovative but emotionally reassuring and culturally relevant for outdoor users in Aotearoa’s unpredictable backcountry.
