People with chronic conditions spend hours each week tracking symptoms, researching health information, and managing care across disconnected tools. Existing apps are often generic, clinical, or overwhelming, failing to meet the needs of those living with long-term illness. The challenge was to create a system that made health tracking radically faster, more intuitive, whilst accommodating diverse abilities and health conditions. We needed to move beyond manual input and reinvent the experience through emerging technologies. Toastie had to balance medical relevance with everyday usability, bridging clinical care and lived experience through a design that felt personal, not clinical.

Initially, Toastie aimed to improve the manual health tracking process by creating a more user-friendly experience. However, after extensive user testing, we discovered that simply improving the manual tracking experience wouldn’t be enough. Chronic illness patients needed a more innovative solution that would make tracking easier and significantly faster. To address this, we created AI tools such as photo recognition, speech-to-text, and automatic categorisation, enabling users to log meals, symptoms and medications in seconds instead of hours. Additionally, Toastie is able to flag irregularities and uncover health patterns in real-time, improving chronic disease management and health literacy.

Tracking is flexible and inclusive, allowing speech-to-text, freeform notes, or structured inputs, all automatically categorised into symptoms, medications, meals, and more. - Digitised lab reports - including blood tests, CT scans, and X-rays - are directly integrated into the app. No more searching through drawers or deciphering medical jargon.
