The team set out to tackle key rooftop camping issues: difficult setup, poor airflow, condensation, safe entry and exit at night, and limited functionality in remote environments. The major design challenge was integrating an intuitive, programmable electronic command centre—powering sensor lights, fans, and device charging, that was also plug-and-play in case of failure in remote locations; and maintained waterproof and dustproof performance. Other considerations included sleep comfort and weight reduction without compromising strength. The design also needed to accommodate modular accessories via integrated side rails and roof mounting points to allow for complete usability and storage in remote locations.

Early development insights highlighted the danger of exiting rooftop tents, particularly at night, together with the need for improved campsite security. This led to the integration of strategically placed motion-sensor lighting—designed for visibility and deterrence—alongside a fully modular, plug-and-play electronic system for in-field servicing. Early prototypes revealed challenges with weight, condensation, storage and providing a premium sleep experience. Oztent overcame this via extensive materials and design field testing in varied conditions. Each iteration was rigorously reviewed against key criteria including weight, strength, waterproofing, usability, and accessory integration milestones.

Environmental: Built for longevity using durable materials, the Apex Roof Top Tents reduce environmental impact through extended product life and minimal waste. Social: Simplifies the camping experience, making remote travel more accessible for a wider range of users, including solo travellers and couples. Commercial: Expands our footprint into the rooftop tent market, complementing our RV tent range and allowing Oztent to offer a full, modular camping system from ground to roof—strengthening our position in the outdoor adventure category.
