HyphaCAP (Communications Access Point) is a portable handheld device enabling critical communication channels to stay live in communication blackspots.

HyphaCAP provides communications to teams operating in areas where a dependable network connection is paramount to public and personal safety, for example emergency, rescue, and disaster relief services, as well as mining and military applications.

The driving technology is an IP transparent network, based on the COFDM waveform, that can operate independently or integrate back to a central core or wider network. This extends coverage for WiFi or Bluetooth enabled devices, sensors, and cameras into challenging environments.

  • Teams using HyphaCAP are working within demanding and often harsh environments, movement are reactive and unpredictable, and clear communication is essential. HyphaCAP needed to be reliable, durable, and easy to use. Mandatory ruggedised product requirements such as a robust IP protection (IP67) and drop resistance were key challenges to tackle to ensure the device remained operational, regardless of where the user's response or mission takes them. What could be considered an abuse case for some devices are commonly presented as standard use cases for devices in this field. Aside from the ruggedized mechanical detailing, the device would need to remain compact and portable for on the go use. Device down-time could sever critical comms, a dedicated solution to allow continuous streaming of network signals was vital, even when replacing exhausted batteries. Charging solutions for exhausted batteries and devices needed to be adaptable to the in-field power options available.

  • HyphaCAP is ruggedised with a vibrant and tactile TPE overmould highlighting the user grip and key touch points. A singular on/off button offers unambiguous operability. The user interface is defined by status LED's informing users of power, network connection and battery capacity. An ergonomic handheld form and accessory attachment points add versatility to its stowing and portability with both clipping and tether points. The battery latch is simple to engage and disengage with one hand, even when wearing heavy protective gloves. HyphaCAP delivers uninterrupted network connectivity, the power budget and battery behaviour reflect this. The hot-swap battery pack (doubling the total battery capacity), allows the device to run for 12 hours. The hot-swap battery pack can be removed and replaced with a fresh battery without disrupting the network and active comms. Back at the vehicle or the depot, multiple replacement battery packs can be replenished via one of two simple charging options.

Since launch, Wireless Innovations has been energised with positive endorsements and feedback. Wireless Innovation has expanded the team and have begun exploring subsequent design briefs for product development.
