  • MORE
  • Howqua River Lodge faced the challenge of achieving full off-grid functionality in a remote, bushfire-prone location. Limited access to utilities required on-site solutions for power, water, and waste. Bushfire risk demanded robust safety measures, including large water reserves, a fire bunker, and fire-resistant landscaping. Material choices were constrained by a commitment to sustainability, using only repurposed or locally sourced resources. Transport and construction logistics were limited by the remote site, requiring careful planning to minimise environmental impact and carbon emissions. Despite these constraints, the project successfully balanced self-sufficiency, resilience, and environmental responsibility without compromising on comfort or design quality.

  • Howqua River Lodge responds to the brief by delivering a fully self-sufficient, off-grid home that prioritises sustainability, resilience, and comfort. It generates its own power through solar, harvests rainwater, and manages waste on-site via a closed-loop worm farm. Bushfire resilience is addressed with automated detection, large water reserves, a fire bunker, and fire-smart landscaping. Locally sourced and repurposed materials reduce the environmental footprint, while efficient heating, cooling, and natural ventilation minimise energy use. The lodge not only meets the demands of remote, sustainable living but does so with architectural sensitivity and a strong connection to the surrounding natural landscape.

  • Howqua River Lodge sets a benchmark for sustainable, off-grid living with broad environmental, societal, and commercial impact. Environmentally, it minimises resource use and emissions through renewable energy, water self-sufficiency, and recycled materials. Societally, it promotes resilience and self-reliance, offering a model for living harmoniously with nature amid growing climate risks. Commercially, it demonstrates that high-performance, sustainable design can be both cost-effective and desirable, adding long-term value while reducing operational costs. The project inspires future developments to embrace sustainability without compromising comfort, proving that thoughtful architecture can meet the challenges of a changing world while enhancing quality of life.

  • A standout feature of Howqua River Lodge is its seamless integration of sustainability and resilience within a refined architectural form. The home’s fully off-grid operation includes a rooftop solar array, 70,000-litre rainwater harvesting, and a closed-loop worm farm for wastewater treatment—systems that are discreetly embedded into the design to maintain a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Hydronic heating within the slab and natural ventilation reduce energy demand without compromising comfort. Its bushfire preparedness is exceptional: a comprehensive system includes 210,000 litres of bore-sourced water, automated fire detection, a dedicated fire bunker, and fire-smart landscaping. These features are sensitively incorporated without dominating the site’s visual or ecological character. Materiality is another highlight—rejected bricks and surplus timber were repurposed, giving new life to waste materials and reducing the project’s environmental footprint. The use of local trades and low-mile transport further aligns with its sustainability ethos. Looking forward, the integration of a food-producing garden and orchard will enhance self-sufficiency and community connection. Together, these features elevate the lodge beyond a residential project—it becomes a blueprint for resilient, low-impact living that respects the environment while delivering a high-quality, nature-connected lifestyle.
