The Britax Unity infant carrier is suitable for babies from birth up approximately 12 months of age. It has a separate base which is installed in to the car using either ISOFIX compatible connectors or by using the car’s seat belt. These options are sold as separate products. The infant carrier is suitable for at least 80% of children when normally discharged for hospital. For the other 15% of children who are of low birth weight, under 3kg, the Unity can have the harness reconfigured so that these children can leave hospital and travel safely which is both an Australian and a world first. The carrier component can be used as a travel system with compatible strollers. Also suitable for use on aircraft.

  • MORE
  • The revised joint Australian and New Zealand Standard released in 2013 includes the option for low birth weight babies including simulated crash testing using a special Low Birth Weight test dummy. This is a world first and the Unity is the first to include this option. Low birth weight babies are generally infants under 3 kg who may also have been born prematurely. This requires a specific harness configuration with specific slots in the infant carrier moulding. Low Birth weight babies can now leave hospital and be transported safely in a specifically designed child restraint. Also suitable for larger babies in the other harness slots provided in the moulding.

  • The infant carriers component can be easily moved from it's in-car base to a travel system compatible stroller or taken inside the house without the baby waking up. The baby can be fully harnessed in to the Carrier before the carrier is taken to the car. The carrier simply connects to the base in a single motion. The carrier can be easily disconnected from the base by holding the handle in one hand and releasing the latch at the back of the carrier. Extra inserts are provide to allow the baby to fit snuggle in to the carrier to encourage the baby to sleep.

  • UNITY is sold in 2 versions. One is with the base installed with the cars seatbelt and the top tether strap the other is using the car's ISOFIX low anchorages and top tether strap. Although ISOFIX has been fitted to cars coming in to Australia, it is our estimate that only 20% of the Australian car fleet has ISOFIX now. Thus a child restraint needs to be able to be moved to another car which may well not have ISOFIX low anchorages. The UNITY also has the ability to be installed using the car's seat belt and top tether strap. The tether strap is attached to the base so there is no need to have the tether strap as extra weight when carrying the infant carrier component.

  • The UNITY as an ISOFIX compatible version is provided with a pair of straps with connectors with engagement indicators, adjusters and a tension indicator. The tension indicator is patented by Britax. The top tether strap is still required to be fitted. There is also a seatbelt installation option for these ISOFIX compatible versions required by the standard. The UNITY as an ISOFIX Compatible product provides a firmer installation in all vehicles compared with the seatbelt installation method. The ISOFIX versions of UNITY still need to be capable of installation using the seatbelt which is required by the Standard.

The Infant carrier can now be taken on to aircraft with the baby staying stay in the infant carrier for the whole trip during including takeoff and landing but the extra seat must be paid for. Only the Infant Carrier component needs to be taken in to the cabin. It is fixed to the aircraft seat with the seat belt passing through the guides in the moulding near the handle. The base can travel as baggage. There is no need to use the tether strap.

The head end of the Infant Carrier includes large side wings lined with EPS foam which give the carrier substantial head protection in side impact. In addition the head end includes a ramp design which prevents the dummy's head being exposed past the end of the carrier when tested in a simulated frontal crash. This is an essential requirement of the carrier to be suitable for babies of approximately 12 months or with the baby's shoulders below the upper shoulder height marker. The profile is a functional requirement of the infant carrier and requires the stying to suit.

The UNITY meets the tough joint Australian and New Zealand Standard which requires testing with larger test dummies 12 kg rather than 9 kg limit applied to some other Infant carriers. The UNITY infant carrier has been upgraded and now complies with AS/NZS 1754:2013. The UNITY is certified by SAI-Global as meeting AS/NZS 1754:2013 with both ISOFIX compatible connection and using the car's seat belt. AS/NZS 1754:2013 has a maximum mass of ISOFIX compatible seats which is 10 kg. UNITY only weighs 7 kg with the base thus is much less than the requirements of the joint Australian and New Zealand Sandard.
