The Designers Institute of New Zealand
With 10 years successful experience as the CEO of The Designers Institute of New Zealand Cathy Veninga has developed a wealth of knowledge and comprehensive understanding of the professional design disciplines that service industry, education, business, society and cultural sectors.
Cathy’s leadership and vision has expertly helped to develop a strong and vibrant professional design community that has grown in confidence and awareness of its vital role in New Zealand.
Her personal networking style and political acumen combine with strong organisational ability and sound financial management to ensure that strategic objectives are developed and initiatives and events are delivered on time and within budget.
An astute innate skill to identify and nurture talent and skills within our creative network has enabled her to reach beyond the potential of a small and vigorous office to achieve things that allow the Institute to take its place alongside other national professional organisations and to be respected by business leaders, politicians, policy makers and community leaders.
Cathy’s involvement with the Designers Institute of New Zealand spans over 20 years. She joined as a designer in 1992 and was elected onto the Board in 1998. In 2003 Cathy became the first female president of the Institute, and then in 2005 the first CEO.
Cathy has cultivated international relationships including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA), and an MoU with the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA). In 2015 an MoU was signed in Milan between the Designers Institute of New Zealand and Cumulus.
Cathy was awarded the Designers Institute Black Pin for Outstanding Achievement at the Best Design Awards 2013. Cathy is a Fellow of the Institute.
